The Salvation Army, an Internationally recognized non-profit, faith based organization, has a job opening for a Camp Music Conservatory Music Instructor I for the Arkansas and Oklahoma Conservatory of Music and Arts, located in Welling, OK.

Job Summary

This is a summer position at Camp Heart O’ Hills. Dates of employment are June 4, 2019 – July 14, 2019. This position summary should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential functions and requirements of this position. The incumbents may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this position summary.

Plans, coordinates and directs the functions of the Conservatory Music and Arts program; ensures the quality of programs and safety of youth at all times;  provides guidance and role modeling to youth and ensures safety and a positive experience for campers. Assist Conservatory Directors, Music Instructor II’s or Studio Coordinators in leadership with an ensemble or class. May also be required to teach classes in music theory and participate in a chorus. 

 

Provide quality music and arts instruction to campers;  Teach music theory as it applies to the appropriate level for playing purposes; Provide appropriate lessons for instruction time;  Review assigned homework with students and re-teach skills if necessary; Be responsible for the care of instruments during class, with necessary repairs immediately reported to the Divisional Music Director;

Prepare students for recitals and concerts;  Plans, schedules, assign and monitor the students work in progress and upon completion to ensure accuracy and completeness;  Recommends and develops activities which will develop musical abilities, motor and learning skills of students;  Coordinates the program and activity within the policies and operating procedures of camp;  Maintains discipline and acceptable behaviors of students, which will create an atmosphere of friendliness and security during all program periods, enabling all students to feel welcome and comfortable;  Participate and assist in various classes as assigned;  Provides constant care for the needs of the campers in an efficient, clean, loving, safe, secure, and healthy manner;  Provides opportunities for physical and mental stimulation through both inside and outside activities;  Participate enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and other all-camp activities and camp functions;  Keep personal living quarters neat, clean and ready for inspection; Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Conservatory Director.  
 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of child and youth behavior and development; Knowledge of the principles and practices of First Aid and C.P.R and ability to ensure the safety of campers and other staff;  Knowledge of the principles and practices of music education;  Ability to teach classes in a group setting;  Ability to teach students music theory;  Ability to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children and youth;  Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff; Ability to plan, develop, and implement effective childhood and youth programs and activities.

Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff; Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques; Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity;  Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid; Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers;

Ability to teach and demonstrate your artistic discipline; Ability to meet attendance requirements;  Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.

Education and Experience

Six months experience teaching in your artistic discipline, with the ability to play and teach lessons in a classroom setting involving more than one student preferred, OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications

CPR and First Aid Certified. Training will be provided at camp.

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff;  Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques;  Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity;  Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid;  Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers; Some physical requirements of this position could be climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate activities are required. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available. The conservatory schedule operates 7 days a week, and all staff members are expected to be available for duty at all times unless otherwise noted by the Conservatory Director. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
