The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith based organization, has a job opening for a Camp Music Conservatory Program Assistant for the Arkansas and Oklahoma Conservatory of Music and Arts, located in Welling, OK.
This is a summer position at Camp Heart O’ Hills. Dates of employment are June 4, 2019 – July 14, 2019. This position summary should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential functions and requirements of this position. The incumbents may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this position summary.
Supervises, plans, schedules and monitors the delivery of program activities and events. Assist in the management of the overall camp operation at the direction of the Conservatory Director. Supervises the operation and set up of all Conservatory evening programs conducted at the camp. Ensure activities that are safe, fun and appropriate to the camper’s age and abilities.
Assists in maintaining the day-to-day operations of the camp including the various programs conducted at the camp that may include waterfront activities, nature, arts & crafts, bicycling, archery, outdoor skills/camping, and challenge course; ensures that programs run smoothly and in compliance with established procedures; Performs all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines as well as American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation standards; Coordinates the weekly schedule of events with Counselors and Conservatory Directors and ensures that it is conducive to a pleasant experience for the campers; Sets up and breaks down all evening programs as directed by the Conservatory Directors and those responsible for planning and running that evenings program. Ensures that all supplies, equipment, audio/visual, and meeting spaces are prepared and in place, and are properly broken down, stored, and cleaned afterwards; Keeps the Conservatory Director informed of conflicts affecting daily operations; Assist with staff meeting; Builds and maintains effective working relationships with campers, staff, and other key personnel to facilitate a smooth camp operation; Ensure campers and staff follows safety procedures in all program areas; Oversee daily checks of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness and good repair; Work with the Conservatory Director in planning, coordinating, and supervising activities related to programming.
Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff; Participate enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and other all-camp activities and camp functions; Sit with camper tables during meals and serve as a table monitor when needed; Keep personal living quarters neat, clean and ready for inspection; Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Conservatory Director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles and practices of youth and children’s activities program development and administration; Knowledge of the principles and practices of child and youth behavior and development; Ability to build and maintain effective mentor and professional relationships with children and youth; Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff; Knowledge of the principles and practices of facility management; Ability to motivate, lead, supervise, and evaluate subordinate personnel; Ability to develop, implement, and enforce program policies and procedures; Ability to develop program plans and goals based on camp needs; Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in order to accomplish work in compliance with quality standards and deadlines.
Ability to communicate, work with, and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff; Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques; Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity; Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid; Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers; Ability to meet attendance requirements; Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
Education and Experience
One year of responsible experience administering and developing youth programs preferred, OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications
CPR and First Aid Certified. Training will be provided at camp.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Some physical requirements of this position could include climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate activities are required. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available. The conservatory schedule operates 7 days a week, and all staff members are expected to be available for duty at all times unless otherwise noted by the Conservatory Director. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
