Hazardous Material Specialist

 

About the Position

The Hazardous Material Specialist will be responsible for the identification, packaging, transportation, and disposing of various HAZMAT in compliance with the proper procedures. We are looking for a high energy, self-starting, experienced individual with exceptional interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Identify, pack, and label all Hazardous material for transportation in compliance with IATA, DOT, and Mil Air.
  • Generate transportation documents in accordance with D.O.T. (49-CFR), Dangerous Good Regulations (DGR), and Mil Air (AFMAN-24-204)
  • Participation in the implementation and administration of SOI’s Hazardous Material Program, results in providing safe storage and disposal of hazardous waste for the ECMM program.
  • Process hazardous materials with a potential for chemical and/or biological exposure in support of the program.
  • Interact on a consistent basis with: personnel assigned to departments from which hazardous/potentially hazardous waste may be generated.
  • Advice and counsel: personnel assigned to departments from which hazardous/potentially hazardous waste may be generated.
  • Collect regulated waste and transport accumulation facility. Inventory, segregate, sort, and label for off-site shipment.
  • Conduct training in initial hazardous waste accumulation.
  • Participate in inspections of hazardous waste initial accumulation points.
  • Generate and maintain appropriate records and manifests of disposed wastes, report discoveries of non-compliance or hazardous conditions.
  • Responds to emergencies regarding hazardous spills/incidents. Assist local emergency response authorities as required.
  • Maintain inventory of emergency equipment and spill clean-up supplies. Order supplies as needed.
  • Stay informed of changes concerning applicable codes and regulations regarding hazardous waste generation, accumulation, transportation, and disposal.
  • May need to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Up to 25% travel.

 

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Waste Management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Department of Transportation (49 CFR), International Air Transport Association (IATA DGR) and Military Air (AFMAN 24-204) Regulations.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills that result in clear, concise, and positive communications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of field operations, company specific policies and procedures, federal and contract regulations.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Demonstrated strong analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • CPR, First Aid, Research AED certifications.

 

 

Education and Experience:

  • 2+ years of experience as Hazardous Material Specialist or similar role.
  • IATA Dangerous Goods certification
  • DOT Hazardous Materials certification.
