POSITION SUMMARY                               

The Operations Manager is responsible for leading and coordinating the Princeton site operations for the Primary Crude unit and the Hydrocal Complex that includes the Hydrogen Generation Unit, Hydrotreater, Amines Unit and Sulfur Recovery Unit. In addition, this role is responsible for the operations of all site utilities and water treatment. Reporting to this position are the Operations Engineer, four Shift Supervisors and operators for the site, OMC (Operations & Maintenance Coordinator) and Relief Supervisor & Training Coordinator. This role also provides process and technical knowledge and support to the operations of these units.


This role is responsible for ensuring all HSE requirements are met, product quality meets specifications, production schedules are developed and executed, daily/weekly and turnaround maintenance activities are coordinated with operations to ensure mechanical integrity and maximum plant reliability. This must all be done while maximizing profitability through production optimization, implementing new products and capacity and by controlling costs as appropriate.


This position is a key member of the site leadership team and is expected to interact with all plant personnel to solve problems and make substantial decisions to effect improvement throughout all areas of the refinery. The incumbent in this role will also routinely fill in for the Plant Manager.

    • 12 Primary Crude Unit Operators
    • 12 Hydrocal Operators
    • 4 Water Operators
  • Relief Supervisor & Training Coordinator
  • Operations Engineer
  • OMC (Operations & Maintenance Coordinator)

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES


GENERAL

  • The Operations Manager is responsible for all the operating units on site and has 4 Shift Supervisors and 24 Operators and coordinates site operations and activities with the Distribution, Lab and Maintenance departments
  • Set clear expectations for direct reports and measure results

HSE

  • Focus on proactive ways to achieve HSE goals for reducing injuries, spills, permit deviations, etc. and leads by example
  • Establishes and ensures operators maintain housekeeping standards
  • Perform thorough investigations on all incidents (safety and environmental) that occur in Operations. Follow up on action items to completion with team
  • Provide safety leadership by having safety talks/meetings with operators, encouraging participation in the behavior-based safety observation system to reduce injuries by identifying unsafe/at-risk behaviors. Promote a do it safely culture that does not cut corners and follows all safety procedures. Enforce all safety rules
  • Perform duties trained in during emergencies. Stay current with emergency procedures
  • Ensure all safety work permits are issues with 100% compliance to procedures
  • Ensure applicable OSHA PSM standards are met and kept in compliance

QUALITY/CUSTOMER FOCUS

  • Ensure team members follow operating procedures to ensure product quality is consistent and meets specifications. Perform thorough investigations on quality issues
  • Work with QC Lab Manager, Customer Service, etc. and follow up on customer complaint corrective actions

PRODUCTION, SCHEDULING, MAINTENANCE COORDINATION

  • Ensure that long and short term production commitments are met and ensures products are loaded and shipped per agreed upon dates for customers
  • Develop, issue and execute on Production Unit Schedules for all areas
  • Understand unit capacities and bottlenecks and identify opportunities for improvements to meet business plan needs
  • Coordinate plans with maintenance to ensure equipment is prepped, clean, locked out for maintenance as required
  • Work with Maintenance on developing long range Turnaround Plans to ensure plant stays compliant with mechanical integrity requirements and plans to maximize plant reliability
  • Ensure operations are occurring per the production and blending schedules
  • Ensures all operators complete all shift reports as required and perform a thorough shift relief. Also ensure all operators are performing a thorough shift relief at their work areas
  • Escalate communications as appropriate during off-shift hours due to any HSE, quality, production issues that occur on shift
  • Increase process/plant reliability by measuring onstream, identifying improvement areas, developing action plans and executing while working with other plant resources

PROFIT IMPROVEMENT & COST CONTROL

  • Maximize profitability through production optimization, implementing new products and capacity and by controlling costs as appropriate

PEOPLE LEADERSHIP & PERSONNEL DEVELOPMENT

  • Promote a positive and team-oriented attitude among your team members and across the site
  • Addresses all employee performance issues in their area
  • Evaluate skills, train and develop the Shift Supervisors and Operators
  • Review goals and objectives periodically with Supervisors and coach them on how to improve performance


POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • BS in Petroleum or Chemical Engineering
  • 3+ years leadership/management experience
  • 10+ years experience in the oil and gas industry


NECESSARY ATTRIBUTES

  • Candidate must be highly organized, self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Able to multitask and handle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good communication, time management and interpersonal skills
  • High level of proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Capability and willingness to supervise employees and hold them accountable
  • People leadership and team building skills


POSITION PREFERENCES

  • 5+ years of experience as an Operations Engineer or similar
